Reasons to Visit Belgium

Belgium is a charming and diverse country with a lot of strings to its bow. It’s one I’ve visited many times. Consider these reasons to visit Belgium.

WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT BELGIUM?

Historic Towns & Cities

Belgium is home to some of Europe’s most beautiful and well-preserved medieval cities. Bruges and Ghent are particularly famous for their historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and picturesque canals. Antwerp has been the diamond capital of the world for centuries. The offices and state rooms of the Belgian Royal Family are in the Royal Palace of Brussels.

In addition to its cities, Belgium is dotted with charming towns and villages. For example, the town of Mechelen is the religious seat of Belgium.

Diverse Landscapes

Despite its small size, Belgium offers diverse landscapes. The Ardennes, in the southern part of the country, is known for its rolling hills, forests, and outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. Beach lovers are catered for on the North Sea coast.

Flat Flanders is excellent for a cycling holiday. In fact, Belgium has an extensive network of cycling and walking paths, making it easy for visitors to explore the countryside and enjoy the scenic beauty.

Art and Architecture

Belgium has been a centre of art and architecture for centuries. The country has produced and hosted an astonishing amount of artists including Rene Magritte, Jan van Eyck, Anthony Van Dyke, Peter Paul Rubens and the Brueghel family.

The country boasts impressive museums, such as the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels (which includes the Magritte Museum), the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (also known as KMSKA), and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.

Foodie Destination

Belgian cuisine is a treat for those who love treats. Indulge in world-famous Belgian chocolates, waffles, and fries. Don’t forget to try the renowned Belgian beers, with the country having a rich brewing tradition and a vast variety of beer styles.

Friendly People

While Brussels Charleroi airport has to be one of the least-friendliest airports I’ve travelled through, the rest of Belgium seems to make up for Charleroi’s shortcomings. I find the locals laid-back, helpful, and humorous. Antwerp stands out as being a particularly welcoming city.

Safe Destination

Belgium is one of my recommended solo female travel destinations. I’ve travelled there a number of times and never experienced any problems. My advice would be to take the usual personal precautions and be mindful of pickpockets around the train stations in Brussels.

Belgium has been subject to a number of indiscriminate ISIS terrorist attacks in recent years, so report any suspicious activity immediately.

Brush up on lots of languages

Belgium has three official languages – Dutch, French, and German – reflecting its multicultural character. This linguistic diversity is evident in different regions of the country, each with its own unique character and traditions.

Festivals and Events

Belgium hosts numerous festivals and events throughout the year. While each town and village will hold its own unique celebration, there are a few major festivals. The most famous is probably the Carnival of Binche, recognized by UNESCO. The Flower Carpet of Brussels is a unique event every second August. Ghent Festival is an open-air extravaganza of music, dance, street theatre, and parades in July. Tomorrowland is one of the world’s largest electronic dance music festivals.

Castles/Chateaux

Belgium is home to a plethora of castles, each with its own history and architectural beauty. Some notable examples include Gravensteen in Ghent, Château de Modave near Liege, and Château de Bouillon near the French border.

European Union Headquarters

Brussels is considered the de facto capital of the European Union. While the Leopold area of Brussels, where the EU HQ is based, isn’t one of my recommended things to see in Brussels, visitors can explore the Parliamentarium Visitor Centre. Besides, it’s interesting to see the administrative junction of 27 countries.

HAVE YOU ENOUGH REASONS TO VISIT BELGIUM?

Belgium has a rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. So whether you’re interested in history, art, food, or outdoor activities, Belgium has something to offer for every type of traveller. I do hope you give it a visit.
