As a self-confessed beach addict, “best beach in Sweden” was one of the many online searches I carried out when researching for my visit to Sweden. Falsterbo Strand in Southern Skåne kept cropping up on these best-of lists. As I was based in Malmo during my holiday, a day trip to Falsterbo was both imperative and convenient.
FALSTERBO STRAND TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
Falsterbo strand is on the southern side of the Falsterbo Peninsula. This peninsula is located on the south west coast of the Skåne region.
From Malmo, take Bus 100 – Falsterbo Strandbad is the last stop on the route. This is also the bus to take for Skanor beach on the west side of the peninsula. The journey takes approximately 1 hour.
WHAT IS THE BEACH LIKE?
Surprisingly beautiful. I didn’t think I would find a Caribbean-like beach in Scandinavia but I did. And there are miles of it to enjoy.
A pine forest and dunes divide the beach from the main road and car park. Within the forest is the Falsterbo Photo Art Museum.
A raised wooden platform leads from the main car park to the beach. Public toilets are available in the car park.
The sky was cloudy when I arrived but both the sand and water were warm. When the sun shone, the beach revealed why much of Sweden flocks to it every summer.
Falsterbo’s white sand contrasts with its turquoise water. Despite the sand, the water was very limpid. The water is shallow which means the beach is ideal for young children. I had to wade out approximately 50 metres in order to get depth for swimming.
It was my first time swimming in the Baltic Sea so cannot compare Falsterbo Strand with anywhere else along this body of water. The most obvious difference between the Baltic and other bodies of water where I’ve swam, namely the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, was the low level of salt. The Baltic Sea has the lowest salinity of any sea in the world with less than half that of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. It means working twice as hard to keep oneself afloat.
IS FALSTERBO BEACH WORTH VISITING?
Absolutely. Sweden is famous for its inland landscape of mountains, rivers and lakes so it was good to experience the country’s under-rated coast. Not only is the area very scenic but the beach had a laid-back atmosphere.
My Falsterbo experience has piqued my interesting in exploring more of the Swedish coast.
